GO Big-Sports Talk With Anthony Bonelli And More

" On November 30, I turned 26 years old. Like everyone celebrating a birthday I received a lot of birthday greetings and carts. Every year on your birthday, you receive special gifts, maybe a PlayStation 4, maybe an iPad, or other material things. This year, I received the same birthday card from two very special people in my life, my brother, and one of my best friends. My mantra in life, is, Go Big or Go Home, which means, if you are not going to do your best you might as well not do it at all. Two very special people in my life took the time to find a birthday card which reiterated my mantra exactly. That is the true meaning of a special gift.

On December 19, I will be embarking on my second basketball regular-season as a coach. This year, I am the Co-Varsity Girls’ Assistant Coach at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. The Red Devils made the State Sectional Final last year, and lost. Upon accepting the position in June, I started thinking about how I could help the girls who worked so hard in the 2013-14 season to win that State Sectional Championship win just one more game. On November 24, the quest for that elusive win began as the Lady Devils took the court for the first time in the 2014-15 season. After I received the birthday card, I really started, and am still trying to impart the mantra, on the birthday card, to the Lady Devils’ Basketball Program, by trying to get them to create a new maximum potential for themselves every day. I do this by trying to get them to work at a faster pace during practice, or getting them to work even harder when they feel they are tired, nothing extraordinary for a coach. People say I am an inspiration, I just read something on Facebook last week, that said attitudes are the real disabilities. That is so true, and that is what I try to impart to not only the teams I coach, but also the people around me. I understand why people think I am such an inspiration, but the way I look at it, it’s not just me who deserves the credit, it’s also my loved ones, my friends, and the people around me who have instilled in me that never give up mentality.

Different things inspire me, whether it’s speeches, quotes, people who are less fortunate than I am, and most importantly people that don’t have the love and support from others but still persevere through adversity, that is what is inspiring to me. People who have every excuse to give up, and don’t. People say that is my mentality, but it’s not because I have people in my life who love me, and support me through all life’s adversity.

The reason why I am writing this is, because I want people to remember what this time of year is all about. I usually write about sports, but I feel this message is much more important, than any ball going into a net, or a hockey puck which shatters the glass boards, or a record-setting downhill skiing time. So remember, GO Big.
