Letter to Campers – Sports Talk With Anthony Bonelli

What’s going on campers? For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Anthony Bonelli and I attended the camp for 5 years. Let me tell you, I don’t know where I would be without those 5 weeks! I learned so much during that time and was able to implement the knowledge and experience this past year. If Quick hasn’t talked about it already, team work was the most important part of my success!
This past year has been a whirlwind, in August 2008 I auditioned to replace Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, having not been chosen did not stop me. In March 2009 I interviewed one of the top high school football coaches in New Jersey, Fred Stengel of Bergen Catholic High School, whose latest NFL draftee was the 15th pick in this years draft for the Houston Texans, he is Brian Cushing. In June, I got the chance to meet and interview Brian while he visited Bergen Catholic for their annual championship football clinic, possibly airing this fall on MSG PLUS.

In January, I called Quick and told him that I wanted to do an interview with an NFL draftee and he said that he couldn’t guarantee me that but he could get me an interview with Coach Fred Stengel, of Bergen Catholic High School. As Quick will tell you, it took 3 days for him to read the interview because it was so long, the interview is available for you to read if you want.

Preparation is also a key aspect of broadcasting. As soon as I found out I was going to interview Coach Stengel, that day I started preparing. All in all, I think I prepared for 3 weeks prior to the actual interview, with the help of Bruce, Ian, and Mike, who sent me sample questions to ask. By the time I walked into that interview I knew Brian and Coach Stengel like that back of my hand through extensive internet research as well as watching Mike Francesa on WFAN and Mike Quick on High School Weekly for their techniques.

As a result of this experience I got to meet and interview Brian Cushing and to say that my first major interview was with a NFL player. I will be attending Bergen Catholic’s opener at Giants Stadium and hopefully helping Quick out!!!

Campers, the biggest piece of advice I can give you for Friday is to have some fun and take it all in because these guys are the best teachers you will have in your broadcasting journey!!!!

Simon Says I will see you later!
